How BMI is calculated

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)² Standard adult categories: under 18.5 underweight · 18.5–24.9 healthy weight · 25–29.9 overweight · 30 and over obesity.

Worked example

70 kg and 175 cm: 70 ÷ 1.75² = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9, which is in the healthy-weight range. In imperial, 160 lb at 5 ft 9 in gives 703 × 160 ÷ 69² ≈ 23.6.

What BMI can and can't tell you

BMI is a quick screening number based only on height and weight. It doesn't measure body fat directly, and it doesn't account for muscle, bone density, age, sex or ethnicity. Athletes may have a high BMI with little body fat, and older adults may have a normal BMI with less muscle. For children and teens, BMI is compared to growth charts by age and sex, so this calculator isn't designed for them.

Is my BMI category a diagnosis?

No. It's a screening tool. A doctor or other health professional can look at the fuller picture, such as waist size, blood pressure and lab results.
