How GPA is calculated

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits 4.0 scale: A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0. Weighted GPA adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP/IB (passing grades only), a common high school convention.

Worked example

An A in a 3-credit class, a B+ in a 4-credit class and a C in a 3-credit class: (4.0 × 3 + 3.3 × 4 + 2.0 × 3) ÷ 10 = 31.2 ÷ 10 = 3.12.

Common questions

Does my school use the same scale?

Many do, but not all. Some give A+ a 4.3, and weighting rules vary by school district and college. Check your school's handbook for the official method.

Weighted or unweighted: which do colleges use?

Colleges often recalculate GPA their own way, so it's worth knowing both.

Disclosures

Uses a common 4.0 grading scale and standard weighting conventions. Your school's official grading and weighting rules may differ.
