How to use this sales tax calculator
Choose whether you're starting from a price or a total. Pick your state to fill in its average combined state and local rate, or type the exact rate from your receipt or your city's tax office. The result shows the tax and the total, or the price before tax.
How it's calculated
Price before tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate) Working backward isn't Total × (1 − Rate): on a $107.25 total at 7.25%, the price is $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100.00, not $99.47.
Worked example
- Tax = $250 × 0.0825 = $20.63
- Total = $270.63

Common questions
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Some Alaska cities charge local sales tax.
Why is my receipt's rate different?
Local rates vary by city, county and special district, so the rate at one store can differ from a store a few miles away. Some items, such as groceries or prescription drugs, are taxed at lower rates or not at all in many states.
Do I pay sales tax on online orders?
Usually, yes. Most states require online sellers to collect sales tax based on where the item is shipped.
Is sales tax deductible?
If you itemize federal deductions, you can choose to deduct either state and local income taxes or sales taxes, within the SALT cap. Most people take the standard deduction instead.
